Is there a Zipcar, but for pickups? I've never used Zipcar, but with all of the bitching about pickups on HN and various other places, what is the quickest and easiest way to rent a pickup truck for an hour or two? Is there an app for that? I don't live in a big metro area, so I'm probably not be aware of all of the possibilities that exist. I believe you can rent pickups from Home Depot, but I don't know how smooth that process is. Without knowing, I'd guess that there is cumbersome waiting around for a clerk to check your driver's license, filling out paperwork, scrolling by 10,000 words of disclaimers to initial here and there and the other place. Then repeating some of the same steps when returning it. Maybe there is a business opportunity here, especially for bigger cities? I'd personally prefer if these pickups were obviously used, rather than gleaming new, so that you wouldn't have to worry about scratching them, etc.. Also, while in general when traveling I think most people prefer newer rental cars (with Rent-a-Wreck being the exception), but I'd also think that people wouldn't care about the pickup being 15 years old for running their sofa over to their friend across town.

Maybe there is an app, and a digital key on your phone, where you just walk up and drive off, bringing it back with a full tank of gas?

And if cities really wanted to reduce commuting in pickups, maybe they'd completely subsidize the first hour (every 3 months, or whatever).

U-haul rents pickup trucks. Sometimes vans or trucks are about the same, but lots easier to load and unload and not much bigger.

Home depot will rent you one per hour pretty easily to get stuff home, a fairly smooth process at the register.

I like the concept, but it definitely needs a roof.
